Semi-destroyed during the last war and subsequently restructured, it retains a suggestive proto- Romanesque crypt with capitals and decorations dating back to the 12th century. The foundation of the abbey is attributed to the first abbot and founder of the monastery of Nonantola S. Anselmo, since one of the main connecting roads between Padania and Tucsia ran along the Apennine watershed which passed right by Roffeno the Benedictine monastery of S. Lucia it developed as a hospitality settlement.
Today it is an important point of union between the two historical roots of ancient Roman roads: the Piccola Cassia and the Romea Nonantolana.
